Cubature: The Installation
Immersive art installation | Visual art | Performative experience | Technology | Accessibility
Cubature: The Installation is an immersive, interactive art installation centered around a modular chamber, which participants enter one at a time. The space is equipped with LED lighting, speakers that emit voice-over instructions, and a system of cameras that record the participant’s behavior. The visitor follows prompts such as: “press your ear to the wall,” “dance,” “meditate.” The experience is inherently performative.
The footage is processed in real time and projected — either via a standard projector or other visual technology — onto an exterior wall, in an adjacent gallery or exhibition space.
The audience watches a looped image of the participant from the perspective of an “external eye,” seeing them as part of a larger structure.
The installation emphasizes the physical presence of the individual within space — their impact on composition, narrative, and rhythm. Cubature deliberately highlights its analog nature: the figures are recorded with a live camera, not digitally rendered. This lends the work an organic character, in which every movement becomes a meaningful gesture within a living, visual structure. From a broader perspective, as multiple participants are projected, a cellular logic of the structure begins to emerge: the cubes form a collective image, resembling a neural network, a grid of consciousness, an urban organism. Each person appears both as an individual entity and as part of something larger — like a cell within society, a thought in a network, a resident within dense urban architecture.
Cubature tells a story of a journey from individuality to collectivity — from a personal gesture to a shared experience. The installation examines how an individual functions within a structure, how their actions resonate within a common space, and how personal narrative transforms into a collective image. By reducing the participant to the scale of a single cube — confined, enclosed — the work makes it easier to perceive the scale of the world we inhabit.
